Water Outage in Edenvale:
Which System Feeds Your Street

A water outage in Edenvale usually comes from one of two places: planned Rand Water maintenance upstream, which the City of Ekurhuleni passes on in a notice, or a burst on one of the town's ageing mains, which comes without warning. Edenvale is also split between two supply systems, so the notice that names your street tells you who to report to. High-lying streets get water back last, because the reservoirs have to refill before the pressure climbs to them.

No plumber can switch a street back on, so this post comes in two halves. The first is the street: which system feeds your road, how to read a notice, why higher ground waits, and where to check and report. The second is the house, the side The Edenvale Plumbers work on: what to switch off while the water is gone, and what to check when it returns.

Which Supply System Feeds Your Street In Edenvale

Edenvale does not sit on one network. The City of Ekurhuleni's notice for a planned interruption in June 2023 split the town in two.1

  • On the Rand Water system: Isandovale, Edenglen, De Klerkshof, Eastleigh, Hurlyvale, Highway Gardens, Buurendal, Illiondale, Sebenza and Meadowdale. These were cut from 18:00 on 9 June to midday on 11 June 2023 so that Rand Water could connect a new pipeline, and the City sent tankers.
  • On the Johannesburg Water system: Bush Willow, Dickie Fritz, Denne Avenue and parts of Modderfontein Road. These had a separate shutdown for Johannesburg Water maintenance on 10 June, from 09:00 to 14:00.

Keep that split in mind whenever the taps go dry. One weekend brought two different outages to the same town, run by two utilities at different hours. It is also one reason a household a few streets away can have water while you do not.

Greenstone Hill is worth knowing about too. Outage trackers that read Johannesburg Water's public data list it under Johannesburg Water, fed from the Modder Hill reservoir,2 so households there should watch Johannesburg Water's notices as well as the City's.

If your suburb is on neither list, start with the City's notices. Each of the Rand Water shutdowns described below reached Edenvale's suburbs through the City of Ekurhuleni.

Why Is There Suddenly No Water In Edenvale?

When the taps go dry with no notice, look at the street before anything else. Parts of Edenvale's network are old asbestos-cement mains, and they burst often. In July 2026 the local paper reported a petition for their replacement. It listed recurring bursts over the previous twelve months in Eastleigh, Edenglen and Highway Gardens and along High Road, Second Street, Central Avenue, Terrace Road, Fourth Avenue and Klipplaat Drive, with at least five significant bursts on High Road alone. Some of the pipes were laid more than 50 years ago, beyond the 30 to 50 years the article gives as their working life.3

The same report explains why some of those outages drag on. Lisa Atkins, a Ward 18 environmental development portfolio committee member, said the municipality repairs only the section that burst instead of replacing the pipeline, and that slow repairs were not only down to a shortage of staff: "There's no piping, there's no clamps, and there's no valves, so it is a massive challenge." Residents had been left without water for long stretches while the Edenvale depot found what it needed for the repair.3

Breakdowns further up the line do the same on a bigger scale. In July 2023 the City shut off supply to repair a leaking pipe at the Isandovale reservoir, cutting Isandovale, Edenglen, Hurlyvale, Eastleigh and the high-lying parts of Sebenza overnight, with restoration expected by 05:00 the next morning and tankers sent in.4 In April 2022 a pump-station power trip dropped Rand Water's reservoir levels and left Edenvale short of water.5

Three things usually tell you which kind of outage you have:

  • A notice. Planned work comes with one, giving the date, the hours and the suburbs. A burst rarely does, though the City may post an update once a repair is under way.
  • Water in the road. Water running down the gutter or lifting the verge, in your street or the next one, points to a burst main.
  • Who is affected. A long list of suburbs means the bulk supply. A few streets around one spot means a local main. Only your house means the problem is probably on your side of the meter, which is covered further down.

Rand Water Maintenance In Edenvale: 2026 And The Rounds Before It

Planned shutdowns start with maintenance on Rand Water's bulk supply infrastructure and reach Edenvale through the City's notices. Three recent rounds show how they run.

July 2024

The City listed Edenvale suburbs from Dowerglen, Dunvegan and Hurlyvale to Isandovale, Sebenza, Highway Gardens and Meadowdale for two long interruptions: 50 hours from 03:00 on 15 July to 05:00 on 17 July, and 40 hours from 05:00 on 29 July to 21:00 on 30 July. The City said it would keep tankers at strategic points.6

December 2025

Rand Water scheduled maintenance on its bulk supply infrastructure from 7 to 15 December, and the City named Edenvale among the areas affected on different days. Its notice warned that it may take up to two weeks after the maintenance period for water pressure and supply to return to normal, especially in high-lying areas.7

The 2026 programme, 29 May to 19 July

This year's programme ran from 29 May to 19 July. The first shutdown, on 29 May from 07:00 to 19:00, was linked to Eskom maintenance at Rand Water's Zuikerbosch and Palmiet pump stations. A longer one ran alongside it, from 07:00 on 29 May to 19:00 on 2 June, for the replacement of raw water motors at Zuikerbosch. Edenglen, Eastleigh, Dowerglen, Dunvegan, Harmelia, Meadowdale, Sebenza, Isandovale and Highway Gardens were named among the Edenvale areas expected to be affected, and full normalisation could take up to two weeks after certain maintenance periods.8

Residents were advised before that round to store clean water for essential use, cut back on garden watering, car washing and pool top-ups, and follow the City's and Rand Water's official channels for updates and tanker schedules.8 We found no newer Rand Water programme for Edenvale when this post was written in October 2026. When the next one comes, it will appear on the same channels.

Why High-Lying Areas Wait Longest For Water

Several of those notices carry the same warning: water does not come back to every street at once, and higher ground waits longest. The Isandovale reservoir repair in 2023 singled out the high-lying parts of Sebenza.4 The December 2025 notice allowed up to two weeks, especially on high ground,7 and in May 2026 the City warned that supply may not return immediately after maintenance, "as reservoirs and systems require time to regain pressure".8

The reason is gravity. A reservoir sits on high ground, and the water in it pushes down through the mains to every house in its zone. The pressure at a tap depends on how far the reservoir's water level stands above that tap, roughly 10 kPa for every metre. A house low in the zone has a tall column of water above it. A house near the top of a rise has a short one.

Why a high-lying street gets water back last A reservoir on high ground is refilling after a shutdown. Its water level is drawn as a dashed line across the picture. A house in a dip, far below the line, has water again. A house on a rise, above the line, stays dry until the reservoir level climbs higher. full Level now Reservoir Low-lying street water back first High-lying street dry until the level rises
Not to scale. The pressure at a tap comes from the height of the reservoir's water above it, so a refilling reservoir reaches the low streets first.

After a shutdown the reservoir starts low and fills slowly, because every house that already has water is drawing from it while it fills. Until the level climbs, the streets at the bottom of the zone get water first, often weak, and the streets near the top get nothing. When their water does arrive, they have the weakest pressure for longest. Where water has to be pumped up to a tower or a higher reservoir, the pumps can only pass on what the reservoir below them can supply, so those streets wait one step longer.

Two things follow for a household. A neighbour lower down the road having water does not mean your problem is in the house. And the first water to reach an uphill tap often comes in spurts, full of air, because an empty main fills from its lowest points and pushes the air ahead of it to the high ones.

Is There A Water Outage In Edenvale Today? How To Check

Work from the house outwards. It takes a few minutes.

  1. Check your own stopcock. Make sure it is open, and that nobody in the house closed it for a repair.
  2. Ask next door. If the neighbours are dry too, the problem is in the street. If only your house is dry, look at the meter: with every tap shut, a meter that keeps turning means water is escaping between the meter and the house.
  3. Read the City's notices. The City of Ekurhuleni posts planned interruptions and repair updates on its website, under service delivery interruptions, and on its Facebook page. It has also said that tanker schedules and locations go out through ward councillors and its digital platforms.7
  4. On a Johannesburg Water street, read its notices as well. Johannesburg Water's contact page gives an email address, sms@jwater.co.za, for receiving notifications of interruptions.9
  5. Check the clock against the notice. If the work has finished and you are on high ground, the supply may still be recovering. If the rest of your street has water back and you do not, treat it as a new fault.

Community groups such as Edenvale 1610 Community on Facebook often carry the news first. Treat a post there as a lead, and go by what the City or Johannesburg Water publish.

How Do I Report A Water Outage In My Area?

Report it to the utility that runs your street, not to a plumber.

  • City of Ekurhuleni: the call centre on 0860 543 000, for the suburbs on the City's Rand Water list and any other street the City supplies.1
  • Johannesburg Water: its contact centre on 0860 562 874 or 010 061 4470, or fault@jwater.co.za, which its contact page keeps for logging water-related incidents.9

Give the street name and number and the nearest cross street, say whether water is running in the road or the verge, and keep the reference number you are given. A burst you can see is worth reporting even when your own taps still work.

While The Water Is Off

  • Switch off the geyser. Santam's head of claims adjustment services, Fanus Coetzee, suggests switching the geyser off for the whole of an outage. A geyser on a high-pressure system without an anti-syphon loop can run empty during an outage and dry-heat, and in Santam's words, "Dry-Heating will damage the element and thermostat".10
  • Close every tap you tried. A tap left open when the supply returns runs with nobody watching, and a basin with the plug in will overflow.
  • Use stored water carefully. Keep the clean containers for drinking and cooking, and use a bucket for flushing. If the City sends tankers, it has said its Water Quality Section tests samples from all of them before they are dispatched.12
  • Expect a gas geyser to sit it out. A gas geyser needs water flowing as well as gas before it lights, and manufacturers publish a minimum water pressure for that; one common 11-litre model lists 0.1 bar.11 On high ground it may stay off for a while after the cold taps start running.

When The Water Comes Back On In Edenvale

The first water through an empty main pushes air ahead of it and carries loose grit from the repair. Open one cold tap at a time, starting nearest the meter, and let each run until it flows steadily without spitting. Then run a hot tap until it flows steadily too, and only then switch the geyser back on, so the cylinder is full when the element starts heating.

After that, watch for signs that something on your side did not come through the outage well:

  • A toilet cistern that keeps filling, or one tap that stays weak after the others have cleared: grit in a valve or an aerator.
  • Weak hot water while the cold runs normally: often grit caught in the strainer of the geyser's cold-water valve.
  • No hot water hours after the geyser went back on: if it heated while empty, the element or the thermostat may be damaged, the dry-heating Santam warns about.10
  • A meter that keeps turning with every tap shut: a leak, possibly a joint or a hose that let go when the pressure came back.

Those are the jobs that start where the street's work ends. If water is running where it should not, close your stopcock first, then get an emergency plumber in Edenvale to find the cause.

The street itself is the City's or Johannesburg Water's to fix, and the reporting lines above are how it gets fixed. When the water is back and the house is not right, send the details through the call-out form at the foot of this page, with your suburb, and we phone you back.

Water Outage Questions From Edenvale

The short answers. The detail, with sources, is in the post above.

How long does a water outage in Edenvale last?

A planned Rand Water shutdown has its hours in the notice: the two July 2024 rounds that reached Edenvale ran for 50 and 40 hours. Recovery comes after that, and the City's December 2025 notice allowed up to two weeks for pressure and supply to return to normal, especially on high ground.

A burst has no set time. The 2023 repair at the Isandovale reservoir was expected to be done overnight, while repairs on Edenvale's old mains have been held up by a shortage of pipe, clamps and valves at the depot.

Why does my neighbour have water when I don't?

If they are lower down the road, they may just be getting the first water as the reservoir refills. Edenvale is also on two supply systems, so one street can have water while another does not. If they are on your level and your system and only your house is dry, check that your stopcock is open and look at the meter: a meter that turns with every tap shut means water is escaping on your side.

Should I switch off my geyser during a water outage?

Yes. Santam suggests switching the geyser off for the whole outage, because a geyser that runs empty can dry-heat, which damages the element and the thermostat. When the water is back, run a hot tap until it flows steadily before you switch the geyser on again.

Is water from the City's tankers safe to drink?

The City of Ekurhuleni said in July 2025 that its Water Quality Section collects and tests water samples from all tankers before they are sent out. If you are worried about the quality of the water you receive, the City asks you to report it to its call centre on 0860 543 000. Fill clean containers that close.

Who do I call when there is no water in Edenvale?

The utility that runs your street. For the suburbs the City listed on the Rand Water system, among them Isandovale, Edenglen, Eastleigh and Hurlyvale, that is the City of Ekurhuleni on 0860 543 000. For the areas on Johannesburg Water's system, such as Bush Willow, Dickie Fritz, Denne Avenue and parts of Modderfontein Road, it is Johannesburg Water on 0860 562 874. A plumber cannot bring back a street supply.

Water Back, But Something Is Not Right?
