Plumber
in Bedfordview
A plumber in Bedfordview works on a network its own ward councillor calls old and compromised, and on some streets the sewer runs behind the houses instead of under the road. Both change how leaks and blockages are found, and who needs to open a gate.
Signal Hill And A Network Under Strain
What Bedfordview's water has been through, from the councillor's own words and the City's notices.
Bedfordview's water comes through the Signal Hill reservoir, which the local paper describes as more than 100 years old. In March 2025, after Rand Water repaired an urgent leak, it struggled to restore supply to Signal Hill, and Bedfordview, Bedford Gardens, Senderwood and St Andrews were still without water eleven days after the outage began.1
The pipes after the reservoir are old as well. In September 2023 Ward 20 councillor Jill Humphreys said she had "over 50 broken pipes and water running all over Bedfordview but not in people's taps".2 In November 2024 bursts on Bradford, Smith, Kloof and Van Der Linde roads followed an outage, and she put it plainly: "Our pipes simply cannot handle the pressure."3 Replacing the asbestos-cement pipes in Ward 20 was still at preliminary design in March 2025.1
For a house, the long outages are the part to plan for. When the supply has been off for days, the first hours after it returns are when weak joints, old flexible hoses and tired geyser valves show themselves, so it pays to be home, to open taps slowly and to look under basins and at the geyser overflow once everything has refilled.
The Sewer That Runs Behind The House
Mid-block sewers, roots, and why a Bedfordview blockage can start two gardens away.
On some Bedfordview streets the municipal sewer does not run under the road. It runs mid-block, along the back of the properties. When Van Der Linde Road had repeated sewage overflows in 2019, the City's spokesperson said the blockages were "caused by root ingress into the sewer line running mid-block through the properties".4
A sewer that runs through gardens runs past trees. Roots go looking for water and find it at the pipe joints, and once inside they catch paper and grease until the line closes. A blockage in a shared mid-block line backs up through the lowest gully along it, which can be yours when the plug is two gardens away.
It also changes access. The manholes on a mid-block line sit in back gardens, sometimes under paving or behind a wall, and a neighbour's gate may be the only way to the one that matters. The City has to reach its own sewer, and so does anyone checking whether a blockage is in your connection or in the shared line.
So the first question on a Bedfordview drain call is where the sewer runs. If your gully overflows while next door is having the same trouble, the shared line is the suspect, and the City should hear about it on 0860 543 000. If only your house is affected, the blockage is in your connection, and roots are the first thing to look for.
Trees are the long-term part of the answer. A line cleared of roots will be found again by the same roots, so a lasting repair seals or replaces the joint they use, or moves the planting. That is quoted separately, in writing, once the joint has been located.
Find the manhole on your property, and the one on the shared line, before the next blockage. It saves the first hour of any drain call.
How A Bedfordview Job Is Priced
The same method as everywhere else, with the local variables named.
The visit
Said on the phone before anyone is booked, and it covers finding the cause.
Access
A manhole behind a neighbour's wall or under paving takes longer to reach, and that time is labour.
Roots or a broken joint
Clearing roots is one price; sealing or replacing the joint they use is a separate written quote.
Long service pipes
A leak on a long run from the meter is narrowed down section by section before anything is lifted.

Bedfordview Plumbing Questions
Cost first, then the mid-block sewer questions.
What does a Bedfordview call-out cost?
The visit fee is the same conversation as anywhere else: said on the phone before booking. What tends to move the price in Bedfordview is access, such as a manhole behind a neighbour's wall or a service pipe under a long driveway, and you get the job price in writing once the cause is known.
Who clears a blocked mid-block sewer?
The shared sewer line belongs to the City, so a blockage in it is the City's to clear: report it on 0860 543 000 and keep the reference number. The connection from your house to that line is normally the owner's, and clearing it is plumbing work.
How do I find the sewer manhole on my property?
Look along the back boundary first for a square or round cover, which may be under soil, grass or paving. If the house plans are available, the drainage layout is on them. Knowing where it is before a blockage saves time on the day.
Which parts of Bedfordview do you cover?
Bedfordview itself, Bedford Gardens, Senderwood, St Andrews and Essexwold, as well as Edenvale and its suburbs next door. Ask in the form if you are not sure your street is included.
Can roots be cut out of a sewer for good?
Not by cutting alone. Roots grow back to the same joint because the water is still there. A lasting fix seals or replaces the joint they come in through, or moves the tree, and that is quoted separately once the joint has been found.
Will the garden have to be dug up?
Not to clear a blockage: lines are cleared through the manholes and rodding eyes. Digging only comes into it when a pipe is broken, and then you are shown where and how much before you agree to anything.
Can the drains be checked before I buy a house?
Yes. A drain check before transfer shows roots, broken joints and blockages in the property's own lines, which is useful to know before you sign. It is quoted like any other inspection.
Why does the outside gully smell?
Usually because its water seal has dried out, which a bucket of water fixes, or because the line beyond it is part-blocked and sewage is standing in it. If it smells again within days of topping it up, the line needs clearing.
