Leak Detection
in Edenvale
Leak detection in Edenvale begins at your water meter. On streets where the main keeps bursting, a wet verge proves nothing on its own, so the first test shows whether water is leaving your side at all. Then the leak is found, repaired and tested again.
Signs That Point To A Hidden Leak
What you notice before you can see any water.
A bill that jumps
Consumption up on the account with no new garden, pool or guests to explain it.
A meter that turns with every tap shut
The surest sign there is. If the small dial creeps while nothing is running, water is leaving somewhere.
A warm patch on a floor
A hot-water pipe leaking under the slab heats the floor above it before any damp shows.
Damp that keeps coming back
A wall that will not dry, paving that stays dark, or a strip of lawn greener than the rest in a dry month.
On A Street That Keeps Bursting, The Meter Decides
How a private leak hides among the City's, and the half-hour test that separates them.
Water on the pavement is a normal sight in parts of Edenvale. The petition reported in July 2026 named recurring bursts on High Road, Second Street, Central Avenue, Terrace Road, Fourth Avenue and Klipplaat Drive, and said the depot repairs only the length of pipe that has burst.1
That makes a private leak easy to miss. When the road outside has been wet on and off for months, a soft patch on the verge or a damp corner of the driveway is easy to put down to the City. Some of those patches are the City's. Others come from the pipe between your meter and your house, and those run through your meter and onto your bill.
The meter settles it. Close every tap in the house and make sure nothing is filling: no cistern refilling, no irrigation timer, no pool top-up, no ice maker. Read the meter, including the small dials, and photograph it. Use no water for thirty minutes, then read it again.
If the reading has not moved, the water you can see is not passing through your meter, and it should be reported to the City on 0860 543 000. If it has moved, water is leaving your side, and the work is to find where: under a floor, beneath paving, in a garden line or behind a wall.
A leak can also start on your side right after a burst nearby. When the main is refilled under pressure, an old joint on a service pipe can give way at the same time. The fix is the same as for any other leak: find it, repair it, and read the meter again with you watching.
Do the meter test before you book anyone. It costs nothing and tells you whether the leak is yours.
How Leak Detection Is Priced
Finding the leak and fixing it are priced as two steps.
The visit and the meter test
Confirmed on the phone. That part establishes whether any water is escaping past your meter in the first place.
Locating it
Testing pipe runs section by section takes longer on a big property or where the pipe route is unknown.
Opening up
Lifting paving, opening a wall or cutting a floor is priced with the making good, before it is done.
The repair
Pipe and fittings listed by name on the invoice, with the cause written up for an insurer if you need it.
How A Leak Is Found Without Guessing
Each step narrows the search before anything is broken.
-
Meter test
Every tap closed, the meter read twice. If it moves, water is leaving your side.
-
Narrow it down
Sections of pipe are isolated and tested until the leaking run is known.
-
Locate the point
The exact spot is found before any paving, floor or wall is opened.
-
Repair and re-test
The pipe is repaired and the meter read again with you there, so you see it stand still.
If It Is Not A Hidden Leak
Bursts, geyser overflows and drains that look like leaks.
-
Emergency plumber
Burst pipe, water through a ceiling, a geyser that let go
-
Geyser repairs
No hot water, a dripping overflow, a burst cylinder
-
Blocked drain clearing
Slow sinks, a backed-up toilet, an overflowing gully
Leak Questions, Answered
The cost of finding a leak comes first.
How much does leak detection cost in Edenvale?
The price follows how long the leak takes to pin down and what has to be opened to repair it. The visit fee is said on the phone. Once the leak is located you get a written price for the repair, including making good any paving or plaster that has to be lifted.
How do I read my water meter?
Lift the meter box lid at the boundary. The black numbers are kilolitres and the red numbers or small dials are litres; for a leak test the small dials and the red figures matter most, because they move first. Take a photo so you are not relying on memory.
Do you have to break the floor to find a leak?
Not to find it. The pipe runs are tested in sections first, so the leak is narrowed down before anything is opened. Opening a floor or a wall is the last step, and it is quoted, with the making good, before it happens.
The meter moves but I see no water. Where is it going?
The usual hiding places are a service pipe under paving or lawn, a pipe under the floor slab, a toilet cistern leaking quietly into the pan, and a geyser overflow running outside where nobody looks. The meter test tells you the water is going; the next tests tell you where.
Is a running toilet a leak?
Yes, and a common one. Drip food colouring into the cistern tank and leave the toilet unflushed for twenty minutes. If the colour shows in the bowl, the flush valve is letting water through, and that is a small repair.
Will my insurer pay for finding the leak?
Some policies pay for tracing a leak once there is damage, and some do not. Phone your insurer before booking if you mean to claim. Either way, the findings are written up with the cause and the location, which is what a claim needs.
Why is there a warm patch on my floor?
A hot-water pipe under the slab may be leaking. Switch the geyser off at the board to stop the water heating, check whether the meter turns with every tap closed, and ask for a call-out. Leaks in hot pipes under a floor waste water and the electricity it took to heat it.
Can the leak be repaired on the same visit?
Often it can, once it is found and the parts are to hand. If the repair means lifting paving or opening a wall, you get the written price first and decide.
