Geyser Installation
in Edenvale
Geyser installation in Edenvale is the cylinder plus everything that protects it: the vacuum breakers, the valves and the drip tray. On streets where the main keeps being drained for repairs, those parts decide whether the geyser empties itself. Electric, gas or solar, each one is listed and priced in writing.
Four Jobs Called A Geyser Installation
Each one is quoted differently, so it helps to say which you have.
Replacing a burst geyser
A new cylinder in the same position, quoted with a new valve set and, if the old one had none, a drip tray with a drain to the outside.
A bigger or smaller cylinder
More people in the house, or fewer. A larger cylinder can need new supports, a bigger drip tray and a check that it fits through the roof access.
Switching to gas
An instantaneous gas geyser on an outside wall, with the gas side done as registered work. See gas geyser installation below.
Adding solar
Collectors or PV panels on the roof, feeding a new cylinder or the one you have. See solar geyser installation below.
When The Street Is Drained, A Geyser Can Empty Backwards
Why the small valves on a new installation matter more in Edenvale than the brand on the cylinder.
Every burst on an Edenvale main ends with the pipe being drained so it can be repaired. The petition reported in July 2026 counted at least five significant bursts on High Road in twelve months, and recurring bursts in Eastleigh, Edenglen and Highway Gardens.1 Upstream faults empty the system on a bigger scale: a leaking pipe at the Isandovale reservoir cut Isandovale, Edenglen, Hurlyvale, Eastleigh and the high-lying parts of Sebenza overnight in July 2023.2
While the main is empty, the pipe from it into your house can empty too, and a geyser is a large tank of water sitting at the top of that pipe. If someone opens a cold tap during the outage, the water in the house pipework runs out under gravity and can pull water out of the cylinder behind it.
Santam's head of claims adjustment described the result in August 2023, writing about Gauteng outages: where a high-pressure geyser has no anti-syphon loop, "it may run empty and lead to dry-heating", and leaving the loop out "would lead to hot water back-flowing through the cold-water taps."3 An element that switches on in an empty cylinder damages itself and the thermostat.
The protection is cheap and has to go in on the day the geyser is installed. Vacuum breakers on the hot and cold pipes let air into the system when the pressure drops, so the lines and the geyser are vented and siphoning is prevented,4 and the cold supply is looped above the cylinder. An isolating valve lets you close the geyser off on its own. Santam names the vacuum breakers, the shut-off valve, the temperature and pressure safety valve and the pressure valve as the safety features to check.3
None of these parts is visible once the ceiling is closed, which is why they belong on the quote and the invoice by name. A quote that says only "geyser installed" does not tell you whether a street repair can empty your new cylinder.
Before you accept a geyser quote, find the vacuum breakers, the isolating valve and the drip tray on it. On a street that keeps being drained, they protect the cylinder you are paying for.

Gas Geyser Installation
Where the unit and the cylinders can go, and the certificate you keep afterwards.
A gas geyser has no tank. It heats water only while a tap is open, so it is chosen by how much hot water has to flow at once, a shower and a kitchen tap together for example, rather than by how many litres it stores. Fitting it close to the bathroom it serves shortens the wait for hot water at the tap.
Where it hangs depends on the model. Units made for outdoor use go on an outside wall and need no flue; indoor units need a balanced flue that draws air in from outside and takes the burnt gases out, and with one fitted they can sit in a cupboard.1 The gas cylinders have their own rules: summarised from SANS 10087-1, they may not stand within 1 m sideways of a door or window, within 2 m of a drain or air vent, or within 5 m sideways of a switched electrical point, a motor or a pool pump.2 On a small erf those distances often decide where the geyser can go.
On the water side, the gas unit is connected into the hot pipework, and the electric geyser is either taken out or isolated; the quote says which. A gas geyser also has a minimum water pressure below which it will not fire, which matters in the high-lying parts of Edenvale after an outage. The gas installations page explains how that pressure is measured before a unit is chosen.
The gas side is registered work. A certificate of conformity has to be issued by a registered gas installer, and according to SAQCC Gas the onus is on the homeowner, not the installer, to have it in their possession. The certificate stays valid for five years as long as the installation is not altered.2,3
Solar Geyser Installation
Two ways to heat a geyser with the sun, and what decides between them in Edenvale.
There are two ways to heat a geyser with the sun. A solar thermal system puts collectors on the roof that heat water, or a fluid, and carry that heat to the cylinder. A PV geyser uses solar panels wired straight to a direct-current element in the cylinder, usually with a normal element alongside it for cloudy days.1 The panels and their wiring are electrical work, done and certified by an electrician; the cylinder end is plumbing.
For a thermal system in Edenvale, frost settles the choice. The town lies between O.R. Tambo and the Johannesburg city centre,2 and at O.R. Tambo the average July night falls to 3.5 °C, with a record low of −8.2 °C.3 One frosty night in 2010 destroyed several hundred solar systems around Johannesburg: they were direct systems, the water froze in the collectors, the copper pipes broke, and the anti-freeze valves meant to dump hot water through them did not open in time.4 Inland, one major cylinder maker advises an indirect system, in which a glycol solution circulates through the collectors instead of water, or a heat pump.5
The collectors need a north-facing roof with little shade,5 so the roof is looked at before anything is quoted. On new building work that needs approved plans, the National Building Regulations set a floor: half or more of a year's hot water heating, by volume, must come from a source other than an electric element, for instance the sun or a heat pump.6 The solar industry association warns that a retrofit kit added to an ordinary geyser may not satisfy that rule on new work.7
Eskom's own calculator puts the saving from changing to a solar system or a heat pump at about 60% of the water heating bill.8 What that is worth in rand depends on how much hot water the house uses and on the tariff, and the City of Ekurhuleni raised its electricity tariff by 8.76% from 1 July 2026.9

How A Geyser Installation Is Priced
The lines a geyser quote should have on it.
The cylinder
Its size and type, and whether it is supplied as part of the job or bought by you. Fitting is priced either way.
The valve set and drip tray
Pressure control valve, safety valve, vacuum breakers, isolating valve and the drip tray with its drain, each named.
Access and position
A low roof void, a complex ceiling or a move to a new spot takes longer, and that time is labour.
Gas or solar work
The gas line and its certificate, or the collectors, the roof mounting and any electrician's work, each listed on its own.

Geyser Installation Questions
The cost first, then size, paperwork and solar.
What does a geyser installation cost in Edenvale?
Four things set it: the cylinder (its size, and whether it is electric, gas or solar), the valve set and drip tray that go with it, how hard the position is to reach, and any gas line or roof work. The visit to measure up is confirmed on the phone, and the quote lists the cylinder and each valve by name, so two quotes can be compared line by line.
How long does a geyser installation take?
The written quote says. Swapping a cylinder for one of the same size in the same spot is the shortest job. Moving the geyser, switching to gas or adding solar collectors takes longer, because of the extra pipework, the roof work or the gas certificate.
What size geyser do I need?
One South African geyser maker's sizing guide allows about 50 litres of hot water per person per day, and suggests 100 to 150 litres for two people and 150 to 200 litres for three or four. The same guide notes that Highveld mains water can reach the geyser at 10 to 12 °C in winter, which is a reason to size up rather than down here. The sizing guide.
Does a new geyser need a certificate of compliance?
Under Ekurhuleni's water by-law, swapping a fixed water heater or the protective valves that go with it is work for a qualified plumber or a person that plumber supervises; a homeowner doing it in their own house has to get a plumber to inspect and approve it. Separately, the Plumbing Industry Registration Board requires its licensed plumbers to issue a plumbing certificate of compliance on geyser work. Ask the plumber for a PIRB card, check the number on the PIRB member search, and keep whatever certificate you are given with the invoice. A gas geyser also needs a gas certificate of conformity, which is a separate document.
What should I do with my geyser when the street's water is off?
Switch it off at the distribution board until the water is back and a hot tap runs steady. An element that heats a cylinder with no water in it burns out, and switching a geyser on before it has refilled is how that happens.
Can my existing geyser be converted to solar?
Often. A thermal retrofit adds collectors to a cylinder you already have, and a PV conversion replaces the element and thermostat with parts that also run on power straight from solar panels. Whether the existing cylinder is worth building on depends on its age and condition, which is checked before either is quoted.
Will my insurer pay for the new geyser?
That is between you and your insurer, so phone them before booking if the old one burst. Santam's head of claims adjustment has said that following the design and installation specifications is "paramount to ensure cover", and that plumbing must be done or approved by registered professionals. An invoice that names every part is what a claim needs.
How long should a new geyser last?
It depends on the water it heats, the pressure it lives under and whether its valves keep working. The warranty period is the manufacturer's and is printed in the cylinder's documents; a warranty claim needs proof of when it was installed, so keep the invoice with them.
